Harga Haut

When Couture no longer serves culture

“Harga Haut” which is Indonesian for ‘The Price of Haut’, aims to raise awareness on the damage done by fast fashion industry to our environment and society. The dress is meant to look like an inverted dead tree, with its black roots at the top (the bodice) and its colorless shrubs on the bottom (the skirt), symbolizing how fast/high fashion is costing us the environment.

In 62 days, the piece was made out of unconventional materials held together with cyanoacrylate adhesive and white glue, the bodice is constructed of paper planes made of black card stocks / pasteboards and secured together using a velcro as the back opening of the bodice. The skirt is made of toilet paper tissues, folded and glued together onto the base fabric.

Harga Haut was part of the O’Level IGCSE Cambridge art exam in 2012 to which it was awarded with the highest merit distinction. After being graded by Cambridge was later exhibited at Citywalk Sudirman, in Jakarta as a part of a window display for 3 months.
